Welcome to the website for the Movimento Defesa da Língua (Movement
for the Defense of Language, MDL). We are a grassroots social
organization, born in 1995 of a project initiated by various
grassroots groups. Like them, the MDL strives for the
naturalization of Galiza's
language, which is internationally known as Portuguese
(português) and is here called galego,
(Galizan). Our goal is to become the point of reference for all
those who defend the full re-integration of the Galizan
varieties into the system to which they belongs, the
Portuguese-speaking world or Lusofonia, particularly in order
to reverse the process of language shift toward Spanish in Galiza, and
to recover Galizan-Portuguese for all language uses.
We are a democratic, open, and horizontal organization which
functions by assembly; we are independent from any other
organization or political group; and we accept and promote freedom of
opinion and speech, except for unacceptable, anti-social practices or
behaviors. More information in section Sobre o

An important milestone in the history of MDL is that, in December of
2001, in Compostela, we successfully brought together for the first
time all lusista (pro-Portuguese language) organizations. One
outcome of that gathering was the December 15
Unitary Reintegrationist Manifesto (M15D), in which Lusofonia is
defended as the only valid option for language naturalization and
recovery in Galiza.
We invite you to review our work up to now, as well as our current
projects. We also invite you to contact us
or to offer suggestions. We are here for the defense of our
language in Galiza.
